What IS Reiki, Anyway?

(pronounced Ray-Key)

Reiki is a meditative system of stress-relief and relaxation that promotes the body’s natural ability to heal itself.  The goal of a Reiki session is to help the body do what it was designed to do: heal.  Reiki seeks balance on an energetic level: this means emotional, mental, spiritual and physical.  It is performed clothed on top of a massage table in a peaceful atmosphere.  The practitioner’s hands touch your physical body lightly, if at all.  Some experience warmth, tingling, and a general calming throughout the process.  The process is generally one of relaxation, and many fall asleep or linger in a wakeful dreaming state.

Reiki aids everything from the healing of injuries, muscle soreness, and post-surgery recovery to so-called chronic conditions.  It heals emotional issues, such as deep-seated fears or groundlessness, and mental issues, such as anxiety and worry.  Reiki even works preventatively as it gently seeks to balance the recipient’s entire system, rather than focusing on current symptoms (illness, injury, bad mood, etc.).  Physical injuries or disease, emotional traumas or abuse, anxieties or regrets: all of these issues are addressed with Reiki because the system is holistic, balancing via the Big Picture: You.

Reiki’s calming and relaxing effect make it a compliment to any and all medical and therapeutic techniques, typically increasing their effectiveness while reducing side-effects. The Reiki Practitioner acts as a sort of channel for this life energy, which is inherently guided to the root of any imbalance, the healing energy automatically flows where the imbalances are in your body regardless of where the practitioner's hands are placed.  Reiki Practitioners do not diagnose, as they do not guide or control the flow (or outcome) of the session. Rather, they hold a supportive role; not that of a “healer,” but rather acting as a facilitator to the client’s natural healing process.  With each session, you become more balanced, more centered, and more accustomed to your natural state of being.  Reiki works preventatively as it nurtures this natural state of harmony, helping you remain centered and peaceful: and thus, better equipped to deal with any of life’s challenges.
